Addison Anemia is also known as pernicious anemia (PA) or Biermer’s Anemia. This is a kind of blood disorder which is the result of lack of vitamin B12. The problem with a patient with Addison Anemia is that they can’t produce the substance that is called as intrinsic factor (IF) which is responsible for the making of vitamin B12.

Addison Anemia can be characterized as the presence of megaloblasts which are the large but immature cells that is considered as the forerunners of red blood cells. Since there are a lack production of Vitamin B12 this can easily be treated with Vitamin B12. It is called Addison Disease because it was first known by Thomas Addison who is an English Physician. Before, he also called it as idiopathic Anemia because it has no cure and has resulted in many deaths. Even the cause of illness was not known before. It is in the year 1872 when it is called Pernicious Anemia by a German Physician Anton Biemer because it can be cured by Vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 can be administered in a patient with the use of parenteral injection. But there are countries where in vitamin B12 can be taken sublingually. Some researchers say that this can be acquired genetically but there is still no further evidence.

Addison Anemia is the deficiency in Vitamin B12 so the symptoms of the disease are related with Vitamin B12 deficiency. Neurological symptoms are seen in this deficiency which includes feeling of numbness, tingling, weakness, lack of coordination, clumsiness, impaired memory and personality changes. Shiny or smooth tongue can be seen as well. Amazingly, there are cases where in Addison Anemia can show no symptoms and is diagnosed accidentally.

The symptoms of anemia can also be found in this disease. Shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, pale skin can also occur because of anemia.
