AIDS or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome is a kind of disease where in the immune system of the body is being affected. This is cause by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Because the immune system of the body is weak the tendency is that the individual is more sensitive with opportunistic infections and tumors. Since this is acquired anyone can get infected by it. This is easily transmitted with body fluids that contain HIV. HIV can be found in the blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preseminal fluid and in breast milk. The common modes of transmissions are through anal, vaginal, oral sex and blood transfusion.
The first stage of HIV infection is not fatal unlike AIDS. Stage 1 is called HIV infection. In most cases the symptoms are not easily seen because it will take some time before it can be diagnosed. The symptoms can be mistaken as flu because of fever, headache, sore muscles, and stomach ache. People infected with AIDS can also infect other people but it will take years before the symptoms will appear. If not treated HIV infection will progress to AIDS which is the advanced HIV infection.
The sad thing about AIDS is that there is still no cure until this moment. Though there are medications that can help to slow down this disease. Antiretroviral treatment is the one that can be used when it comes to slowing down the effect of HIV. AIDS is considered as a pandemic disease. In year 2007 there are lots of people who have died because of AIDS.
If there is no cure with this disease then the only way to prevent this disease is to concentrate with its prevention. Sexual transmission is one of the common ways that this can be transmitted so safe sex is very much needed. The use of infected needles should also serve as a precaution.
