What is Albinism Ocular?

Albinism ocular is a kind of albinism that is affecting the eyes or the vision. This is a rare and non-degenerative disorder. This is the lack of pigment that affects not just the appearance in the eyes but also the ocular development of the eyes. Because of the lack of pigment the color of the iris will be affected. The eyes have the tendency to be light sensitive. Lack of pigmentation will surely affect the normal vision. The pigment of the eye is called as melanin. The usual color or the iris of the person with ocular albinism is usually blue, green, and brown. This kind of albinism will not affect the color of the skin or hair unlike in other types of albinism. Though there are cases that the color of the skin will be lighter but this is not severe and often unnoticeable.

Albinism ocular is a genetic condition and therefore there are only limited options of how albinism can be treated. This is often seen in infancy or during early childhood. There are only limited ways on how the vision of the patient can be improved. Most common symptoms of this disease are reduced visual acuity from 20/60 to 20/400. In some cases other symptoms might be present like involuntary eye movement (nystagmus), eyes that do not look in the same direction (strabismus), and increased sensitivity to light (photophobia). There are different kinds of ocular albinism but the most common is the albinism type 1 or also known as Nettleship-Falls. There is a research that said that this is much common in males than in females.

The usual treatments that are being used are eyeglasses and bifocals, prescription sunglasses, contact lenses and lens replacement. It is also important that the emotional and social adjustment should be considered.
