What is Amoebiasis?


Amoebiasis or amebiasis is caused by protozoa that infect the colon and is a type of gastroenteritis infection but it has the ability to scattered in the soft tissues like the liver or the lungs. This is caused by amoeba Entamoeba histolytica. This is somehow threatening as this is one of the leading parasitic causes that can lead to death that is common worldwide. But there is also case of amoebiasis where there is no symptom.

The usual symptoms of amoebiasis are non specific diarrhea with loose and semi formed stools that are usually foul smelling. The urge to defecate is strong even there is only small amount of stool. Other symptoms include abdominal cramps, fever, fatigue, and nauseating feeling. However there are severe cases of this disease which includes amebic liver abscesses. This sometimes requires the need of hospitalization and surgery.

This will commonly affects in young and middle aged adults but can affect anyone regarding of age. The disease is commonly transmitted from person to one person with fecal and oral transmission. Because of this mode of transmission this can be seen in areas where there is poor sanitation or poor hygiene. This can also cause diarrhea especially into tropical and sub-tropical places. In order to prevent this disease isolation and enteric precaution must be observed. Health Education is also important in order to prioritize proper hygiene.

Other mode of transmissions can be through direct contact like sexual activities by orogenital, oroanal, and proctogenital sexual activity. While in direct contact it is also possible that it can infect a person through ingestion of uncooked food that contains fecal materials with E.histolytica cysts.

Amoebiasis is an infection that is hard to treat and it requires courses of specific medication. Drugs that are commonly used are Metronidazole, Paromomycin or Diloxanide.
