Researchers found a new way to slow and stop the growth of cancer cells.
According to the Washington University Researchers, they have discovered a way to stop and slow the growth of tumor. They found out that it is possible that cancer cells can also die and age like normal cells.

According to Weihang Chai, an assistant professor in WWAMI medical education program and WSU School of Molecular Biosciences, they are trying to make the cancer cells age and die to prevent the growth of these cells. She said that cancer cells are also considered as “immortal” because it does not age and die easily unlike normal cells. She also said that their study is focusing on how to make the cancer cells mortal.

Based on their studies, normal cells lose a small portion of their DNA when they reproduce. The molecule’s strands lose part of their telomeres, also called protective tips. When the telomeres become too small, it will signal the cell to stop growing and reproducing.
According to Chai, cancer cells have special mechanism that allows them to reproduce without shortening their DNA strands which gives them more like an eternal life. The telomerase enzyme of the cancer cells extends one strand of the DNA of cancer cells and the proteins in the body lengthen the second strand.

According to the writings of Chai and his colleagues in the current issue of The EMBO journal, they found a protein that can control the production of the second strand in the cancer cells and they found a protein that can be of big help to synthesize it.

According to Chai, if the second strand will not be lengthened, the cancer cells will be like normal cells. They will easily age and die because their function will be like normal cells. When they try to reproduce, they can lose a portion of their DNA and they will die. She also said that their team will be focusing on how to block the function of the regulatory protein.
